Wing resolver (merged in #207, flag OFF) cannot meet its goal; defects found by independent Opus review — do not enable INGEST_WING_RESOLVE or run wingmigrate -apply #208

Source: independent read-only review (Opus agent) of #206/#207 + #205 plan, 2026-10-20. Items marked VERIFIED were re-checked by me in the code; others are the reviewer's execution results, not yet reproduced by me.

Decision recorded

INGEST_WING_RESOLVE stays OFF. wingmigrate -apply must NOT be run on the live brain (not transactional, no rollback manifest, brain-sync can push it half-done, and with the watcher running the moved legacy entities can be recreated). Dry-run is fine.

Defects in merged code

  1. Approval loops (VERIFIED in code). Resolver.explicit applies the same eligibility check to a subfolder/frontmatter wing. With the live classification.yaml only homelab/hyperguild are eligible, so moving a parked note into raw/<wing>/ (the documented way to approve) parks it again for 35 of 37 wings. brain_promote/brain_reject read only raw/<basename> (VERIFIED: readRawSource), so they cannot act on needs-review/ entries that brain_pending lists. The #205 line "approving = existing brain_promote" is wrong. Approval path must exist before any flag-on.
  2. The "BM25Scorer" is not BM25 (VERIFIED). search.Query scores strings.Count(lower, term) — raw substring counts, no term weighting or length normalisation, so one long off-topic page outscores a perfect short one (reviewer: 50 vs 5; answered homelab 37/55). TestBM25Scorer_ABigWingDoesNotWinOnVolume does not cover the one-long-page case; the type name and test name overclaim.
  3. Same entity gets a page in every wing (by design of the wing-scoped inventory; reviewer reproduced jev.md in two wings). Slugs are the graph's global identity (graph/extract.go), so this breaks uniqueness. A legacy source re-ingested with a wing is written twice (dedupe only looks inside one wing).
  4. Coupling of two policies. classification.yaml means "safe for cloud/us-nexus harnesses"; reusing it as the auto-placement allowlist ties them together. The real risk is client content landing in any wing; check content (e.g. the CLAUDE_INGEST_CLIENT_BLOCK regex) before extraction instead.
  5. Backtest population was wrong. 55 engineering notes, not the clips actually dropped in. Reviewer ran the local model on 11 real clips: none of the 4 already filed under applied-ai-radar went there; same answer twice on 8/11; confidence 0.85–0.95 even for clips Mathias rejected by hand. Both wings that auto-placed in the backtest are ineligible in production, so real coverage was 0/55.

Process notes (mine)

  • #207 was merged after a partial backtest (17 samples) had already shown BM25 agreement near zero; the PR title ("place raw notes in a wing without human typing") claims what the backtest did not support. Flag-off limited the damage; the claim should not have shipped as the headline.
  • Merged #206/#207 via the Gitea API with the owner token after the MCP merge tool refused risk/medium; Mathias approved this for the sprint (#205 comment), but the bypass should have been noted on the PR first and an issue filed for the merge tool.
  • Residuals from the #206/#207 reviews were not filed as issues (changedSince size+mtime limit; stuck set in memory; park failure re-errors every poll; empty-frontmatter note).

Proposed direction (pending Mathias's decision, see #205)

Reviewer's top 5: (1) a known subfolder wing always places and promote/approve works on needs-review/; (2) no-signal notes go to ONE default reading wing, classifier out of the hot path, falsified if >20% are moved by hand in two weeks; (3) block client content before extraction; (4) entities/concepts stay global, deduped across all wings; (5) migrate legacy pages by stamping wing: in place, not moving files. Do not tune thresholds/embeddings before the default wing has run two weeks. Also: 5 of 11 real clips were rejected by hand, so a "worth keeping?" triage may save more time than choosing wings.
